About Touro University College of Medicine

Touro University College of Medicine will lead the way, through a student body of bright, tenacious, compassionate and diverse individuals who will emerge as the health care providers and leaders of tomorrow.

Founded in 2007, in Hackensack, New Jersey, TouroMed is working towards LCME accreditation. Once awarded, TouroMed will grant the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree and will join the approximately 130 other such programs in the United States helping to increase the outstanding physician workforce.

The need for an additional medical school in New Jersey is great. New Jersey currently falls below the national average in first-year positions at MD programs per population. Based on 2005 data, New Jersey had 3.8 matriculants per 100,000 people. With the addition of 100 positions at TouroMed, the New Jersey number would jump to 4.9. Nationally, there are 5.8 matriculates per 100,000 people.

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has called for a 30 percent increase in US medical school enrollment by 2015, which will result in an additional 5,000 new MD’s annually. TouroMed is responding to that call.
